After his mother suffered a stroke in early 2013, Chuck wasn’t sure she would ever make it back home again.
But in the months following her release from the hospital, Chuck saw his mom coming back to herself, under the watchful and caring eye of her Home Helpers caregiver, Maria.
Maria, Home Helpers of Hinsdale’s Caregiver of the Quarter for Jan.-March 2014, spends 8 hours a day, 5 days a week with Emily. And although the 85-year-old cannot speak or write, the two women seem to have no problem communicating.
“They have a chemistry,” Chuck said. “Maria has become part of our family.”
Chuck isn’t the only person to notice that Maria is an extraordinary caregiver. Her Home Helpers supervisor, Mandy Greco, said Maria helps to foster a sense of accomplishment in her client.
“Maria involves Emily in all of the day-to-day tasks. She works very hard to give her client a sense of independence in a loving and discreet way,” Greco said.
Maria plans activities for her and Emily to enjoy together, like shopping trips and gardening projects. But as any caregiver knows, things don’t always go as planned.
“On more than one occasion Maria has handled a medical emergency. Each time her quick response and ability to follow Home Helpers emergency procedures were crucial to her client’s prognosis,” Greco said.
Along with providing his mother with compassionate care and companionship, Maria provides Chuck and his family with peace of mind.
“I’m a worrier,” Chuck said. “But Maria lets me worry a little less. I know I can count on her.”
Maria received a $100 gift card as Caregiver of the Quarter and will be nominated for national recognition by Home Helpers.
